To simply explain what a gas spring is, we can say that sometimes it’s called a gas damper. It pushes exactly like a regular compression spring, but has dampening characteristics. A common application area for gas springs is when you need controlled opening and closing of primarily trailer sides, hatches and hoods on cars, boats, trailers, caravans, machines and agricultural machines. This helps these different devices to work, while the vehicle becomes smoother and more efficient.
Broad application area
Gas springs have a large and broad application area. They are used, in addition to those applications named above, also on equipment within the healthcare sector, furniture industry, ventilation dampers and different types of appliances, electrical equipment and machine parts. The list can be made very long and covers all types of industries. They have shown to be very useful and gas springs can save a lot of work.
Additional purposes
One additional application area is to lift really heavy parts by hand together with the help of a gas spring, or gas damper as they are sometimes known. If you would like to know more or require additional information just give us a call.
Great potential of a gas spring
The potential applications of a gas spring are many. It is your innovations and ideas that together with a gas spring can create functional products. It is only your imagination that sets the boundaries.
Technical information
A gas spring is built up of a piston housing, piston rod, piston and seals. It is filled with nitrogen at a high pressure, to create a counter force of up to 2500 N. Nitrogen is an inert gas, which means it will not burn, explode or is toxic. In addition to nitrogen, the gas spring also contains a small amount of oil. This oil provides optimal lubrication and it also gives the gas spring a hydraulic dampening at the end of the stroke.
Gas springs are maintenance free. You must not lubricate the piston rod with grease or oil. The piston rod must not be painted and should be protected against impact.
Valeryd’s gas springs work in temperatures from -35 degrees Celsius to +90 degrees Celsius. Gas springs must not be overheated or place in an open flame.
